For years, Frank and Barbara Resnek have been on a mission: to find better treatments, and ultimately a cure, for primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). A rare, chronic liver disease, PSC affects about 30,000 people in the United States—including the couple’s grandson.

“Our family understands the impact of this disease firsthand, and we are committed to rapidly bringing better treatment options and outcomes to patients around the world,” Frank says.

In 2019, the couple established the Resnek Family Center for PSC Research at the Brigham. Led by renowned gastroenterologist Joshua Korzenik, MD, the center is a first-of-its-kind research powerhouse dedicated to solving the disease.

Recognizing the tremendous time, effort, and resources needed to bring discoveries from the lab to the bedside, the Resneks were determined to secure the future of the center and sustain its momentum. This led them to make a gift of real estate as a way to accelerate their support, an option that is often overlooked but holds significant potential for charitable giving.

Since many Americans hold much of their assets in forms other than cash – such as real estate, closely held stock, and business interests – gifting these often-appreciated assets can provide significant tax benefits while making a meaningful impact.

“It’s advantageous to save on taxes while supporting an important cause,” says Frank. “It’s a win-win situation.”

To make the whole process easier, the Brigham connected the couple with Charitable Solutions, LLC, a firm that specializes in accepting appreciated assets and maximizing charitable donations. The seamless process provided the Resneks with an efficient option to continue supporting the work of the Resnek Center into the future.

“With the Brigham, we found people as devoted as we are to finding new treatments,” says Barbara.

“We wanted to make sure there would be funding for the Resnek Center long in the future,” Frank adds. “People around the world will benefit as the Brigham continues this research for PSC therapies and possibly a cure.”
